Our Projects
Fagunwa Society is committed to implementing change on a very real level. Therefore, in order to reach our goals, we have developed projects that individually effect meaningful change. Some of our current projects include...
I. Yoruba Studies
If you believe that the Yoruba culture is a force to be reckoned with, to be proliferated and celebrated forever, if you believe that the only way for a culture to achieve permanence is to produce an educated people, then you believe in Yoruba Studies. We need workers to assist with organizing the courses, recruiting students, assisting teachers, and general support of the Yoruba Cultural Institute.
- Literature Courses
- Culture Courses
- Drumming & Dance Courses
- Cooking Courses
II. New Immigrant Adjustment Program
Every new immigrant feels that he is enduring a unique set of challenges upon arrival, however much of the experience is universal. We at Fagunwa Society seek to lessen the blow of this culture shock on our fellow countrymen and other foreign immigrants. If those who have been here longer, have already stared down many of the challenges that new immigrants will face and have learned the secrets to survival and success in the concrete jungle, will share of their experience, the burden of new immigrants can be greatly lifted. Answering questions that they otherwise would not get clear answers too, providing the type of assistance that would otherwise be unavailable, greatly change the Afrikan immigrant experience for the better.
- Assistance with research on schools, school applications, student loan applications, work study/student work
- Assistance with job applications, driver’s licenses, settling down
- Social & cultural adjustment
III. Yoruba Women’s Circle
Are you a progressive Yoruba Woman who seeks to break bread with other Yoruba women? If you seek a positive space in which you can share or receive career, relationship, spiritual or personal advice or support, then the Yoruba Women’s Circle was created for you. Members of the Women’s Circle will participate in Fagunwa Society’s philanthropy projects to include mentoring of younger women and girls and will receive all the benefits allotted to Fagunwa members.
IV. Aditu Magazine
Are you a writer who celebrates Afrikan culture? Do you feel you have something to share, to teach, to explore in writing? Would you like to be part of something advancing permanence and true education in the Afrikan community and beyond? Aditu Magazine will educate the public on true Afrikan culture from Yoruba across the continent and across the Diaspora while showcasing the new birth of the Afrikan Renaissance generation. The magazine will be a balance between an intellectual journal with purely educational substance and a mélange of Afrikan popular culture. We want to make it stimulating and entertaining to celebrate true Afrikan culture, not the heavy, burden laden boring process it has often been made to be.
Aditu will be a print magazine providing access to esoteric information on Yoruba and Afrikan history, culture, language and spirituality otherwise unavailable to the public. We want writers who can fashion memorable yet engaging articles out of profound meaningful content. We also want writers for the lighter side of things who will focus on fashion trends, music, the social scene; all with an underlying understanding of their relative effect on the greater culture of our people. We will feature advertisements of businesses whose missions align with this.
- Writers ( Interviews, Editorials, Columns, Research papers, Reflective Writing, Fiction )
- Graphic Designers

- Solicitors for Magazine Ads
- Print/Layout Designers

V. Workshop/ Lecture Series
In addition to the Yoruba Cultural Institute’s courses, Fagunwa also hosts workshops that deal with matters relating to the culture and spirituality of our people and other cultural groups. These workshops are expected to be open to the general public, some free, some at cost. We need workers who will facilitate the workshops, plan and organize them. This includes responsibility for publicizing events and preparing media and materials required for the workshops.
Some Workshops Include...
- 7 Steps to Spiritual Maturity
- Introduction to the Orisas
- Contemporary Afrikan Leadership: Failures and Successes
VI. Yoruba Spiritual Circle
If you are an Orisa practitioner who seeks fellowship with others in the religion, especially those still seeking the truth of the religion, find yourself at home at the Yoruba Spiritual Circle. The Circle will meet a few times a month to discuss and examine the practice of the religion, the history and future of Orisa and participate in rituals. This is a great place for beginners to learn and for the seasoned to share, but of course, the seasoned will learn and the beginners will share.
VII. Debate & Symposium Series
Fagunwa Society will regularly host debates and symposiums on topics of great meaning to our membership and the community we serve. These events will be opportunities for members and non-members to engage in discourse on controversial and compelling issues, on both sides. Each event should be opened by a poem or song and closed with the same. We need workers to outline debate topics, plan the events and register debaters in the form of students and/or scholars and experts.
